As Akron boomed throughout the 1920s, so did the school. All of the workers in rubber and tire industries needed post-secondary education, and the University of Akron was there to deliver it. It was during this period that the enrollment exploded from a mere 198 students to well more than 10,000. The University of Akron, commonly called UA or Akron, is a public research university located in Akron, Ohio. Founded in 1870 as a small religious college, the university transitioned into a full-fledged state college in 1967. UA is a STEM-focused institution, and its most recognized college is the College of Polymer Science and Polymer.
